About the artist
Liz Elton is based in London. She has a BA in painting and an MA in fine art from the University of the Arts London (Wimbledon and Chelsea colleges). A Mark Rothko Memorial Trust Artist in Residence at the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils, Latvia in 2022, she has been shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize three times, was awarded special commendation in Dentons Art Prize 2018 and Second Prize in the Sustainability Art Prize 2020. In 2022 she was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Liz’s practice begins in painting, moving into the expanded field to explore the potential of waste and the recycling of matter. She often uses compostable grounds dyed with waste and embedded with seeds and dust. Much of her work is made with the intention of not lasting, thinking about food, waste, and soil exhaustion and considering the question ‘how to continue?’. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking and photography.
