Since meeting in 2010 Daniel & Clara have dedicated themselves to a shared life of creative experimentation. The artists work across moving image, photography, performance and mail art to explore the nature of human experience, perception and reality.
The camera is Daniel & Clara’s primary tool. They work with both digital and analogue, still and moving images, to investigate the role the photographic image plays in how we create meaning and make sense of the world around us.
Daniel & Clara’s current projects focus on the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Particularly, they are exploring the climate crisis as a psychological crisis. They are interested in how the images we create of nature inform our understanding of what nature is and in turn what the human is.
Daniel & Clara live on Mersea Island on the Essex coast, UK.
The Lost Estate
The Lost Estate is a photographic series which explores the relationship between humans and the natural world. This it does through imagined narratives taking place in the gardens of a country estate. Commissioned by Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, supported by East Anglia Art Fund. They created the work at High House Artist Residency.
Birding
Birding is a body of work about the human gaze, exploring the optical and psychological processes at play when humans look at nature. The artists are particularly focusing on birdwatching and the projections that take place between watcher and bird. Daniel & Clara use moving image and photography to depict wild birds, trained birds and taxidermy specimens. This leads to an engagement with the various ways in which we have looked at and studied birds through history and the role images play in understanding our relationship to the natural world.
Birds & Beasts of the British Countryside
This work consists of a series of hand-painted photographs of dead animals. Daniel & Clara encountered them during their daily walks in the countryside. Each work is a uniquely hand-painted c-type photograph with the name of the species along with place and date found inscribed in white india ink.
On The Island
On The Island is a series of 100 short videos initially shared through Instagram. These depict Daniel & Clara in the landscapes of Mersea Island on the Essex coast, where they’ve been living since spring 2020.
The work is a response to the psychological impact of the global pandemic and the physical restrictions of lockdown. On The Island captures moments of deep engagement with the landscapes and weather through that strange year when we all found ourselves confined to our local environments
