“I work in the landscape at night from dusk till dawn, especially the time when the light slowly fades only to creep back in at dawn. The weakening hour…..

A personal definition of ‘space-time’

Bill Jackson prefers to see his work not as images or objects but as appearances that reveal themselves over time. He works as an investigative artist and revolves around creating spaces to allow people to take time out from their busy world and to invite them into his secret world.

“….As a viewer, you are removed from reality and are invited in to contribute to the narrative that evolves before you. I interrogate concepts of time which is crucial to my ideas, exchanging the classic definition of photography as a series of instant glimpses of the world in which we live, to a personal definition of ‘space-time’. “

Concerns about the environment

The subtext of Bill Jackson’s work, especially his films, highlights concerns that we all have about our environment. Living and working in Suffolk, he documents his local landscape, both sea and land and the strip in between.

“I am a Green Party member and currently changing our land to a more natural landscape planting over 7,000 trees and shrubs and investing in alternative power technology. Becoming part of GroundWork NetWork will introduce me to artists with similar concerns so as to enable interdependency of ideas and practice.”

Experience in film, photography and multimedia

Following his initial study in Coventry and Birmingham artschools, Bill Jackson worked for a while in commercial advertising. He went on to teach and spent 26 years lecturing in various art schools in film, photography and multimedia. As Head of Development in Online Learning in Warwickshire College, he developed an interactive TV learning environment.

Bill continued his interests in photography, film and electronic art while he was teaching and has exhibited around the world in various museums and galleries. He has received three Royal Photographic Society International Print Awards.

In 1986 he left the Photographers Gallery and went into cyberspace for 20 years, concentrating on developing media streaming services online, interactive installations and light projections. He took early retirement in 2005 and returned to print based media. Over the last 10 years his interest in the combination of moving and still imagery reignited into the nocturnal work he does today.
