Adam King ’s current work explores themes around masculinity and male representation. Much of Adam King ’s output is collage or drawing-based. He likes the immediacy of drawing and the contingency of collage; there’s alchemy and the potential for transformation.
Collecting and assembling images, often making use of historical forms, he deconstructs and re-contextualises them. Characteristically, his resulting work regards the contemporary moment in subversive and humorous scenarios.
Edge of dystopia
Adam King’s previous work focused on landscapes that have been affected by human encroachment. He showed a large installation in 2019 from this phase as part of the GroundWork exhibition On the Edge. For this he installed a 3D collage up through 3 storeys of the building, throughout the stairwell. Adam King continues this interest through his recent work. He composes collages of reconfigured photos, using charity shop references. They transpose the fickle wants and desires of consumerist dreams into vistas that may evoke edge-of-dystopian wastelands and sci-fi-tinged cityscapes.
The natural world
‘The natural world has always been a great source of value to me. This may be due to a childhood in Norfolk in the seventies spent climbing trees, making dens and swimming in local rivers. Being in nature is in my DNA and I enjoy cycling out into the countryside and noting the wildlife around me in the city. Recycling is a subject that I am passionate about, and I have been a member of the RSPB and Greenpeace for over 20 years. ‘
Adam King lives in Norwich and has a studio in OUTPOST.
He says: ‘I’m delighted to be part of this network and to support the gallery in displaying art that invites and challenges the viewer to see the natural world in new and different ways.’
