Lesley Williams

Lesley Williams has been a painter for as long as she can remember, immersing herself in the landscape, whether in her own garden or in a wilder setting. Coastal landscapes fascinate her. The transitory nature of such surroundings is a constant fascination, through cycles of weather, tide and seasons.

Lesley, who has a formal background in history of art, appreciates how: ’Everything changes and evolves through time, even the most solid rocks eventually eroding and crumbling. Small changes become significant . And close observations feed into what turn out to be big and urgent questions we have to ask, such as, “Where are the insects and bees, why are there fewer birds in the garden?”

Making a difference as individuals

Lesley Williams believes that we can make a difference as individuals, considering lifestyle choices, using organic gardening techniques and supporting wildlife in our own small spaces. Collectively this can be very powerful.

“There are also emotional ties and responses to landscapes and areas we love. All of this becomes a part of the creative journey.”

Lesley Williams endeavours to use her art to capture a moment in time and to establish a sense of place in her paintings.

Collaborations and exchange of ideas

For Lesley Williams, being part of a new and wider community who want to make a positive difference is an exciting prospect. But also it helps to sharpen individual contributions.

‘I can see how GroundWork NetWork opens up many possibilities for collaboration and exchange of ideas, and that what, up till now, I have seen as my individual practice, can grow from being open to new contexts.’
